Well, have the old "Hum-Bugs" happening again. If I see one more studid, over-cheezy X-mass ad, or one more "I'm so Christmas-Spirited-Up" avatar, I think I'll scream...I think this pic I came accross just fits my mood perfectly at the moment...

OK....firstly, why am I writing this here....because I am trying to get the word out and to show my support toward a boycot of a company that has well and truly crossed the line. So what's the fuss all about? - let me explain....

As of earlier this year, Sony began trialling a new style of anti-piracy software to protect their interests called XCP (developed by the company First 4 Internet). Now don't get me wrong, I'm happy for companies to impiment various copy-protection measures, so long as I still have the right to make a back-up copy for myself - this is not the issue at hand. The program at hand here uses a "root kit" to cloak (or hide) itself deep within the user's system, limiting the copies that can be made, but also limits what media-players which can be used to enjoy the music. It get worse however.

Not only does on enot get a choice but to install the device if they wish to play such CD's on their computer (at THIS stage only PC's - YET!), just try removing the software. Attempts to ferret out and remove the software can disable the CD player itself...worse still, because the root-kit technology is also starting to be used by viruses, if a virus scan removes the "spy-ware", you could also lose your CD player.

So what's being done about it, and how can we help in the fight? Presently lawsuits are being lined up against Sony/BMG...as well as this, there is a call for as many as possible to boycot the label and all it's music-based products. If we dont get the message hard and fast to the company now, we may well be looking at the future of all digital media...

The best way, as always, to get the message across to Sony - and other companies who will be watch and waiting - is via the wallet. Refuse to buy the products - better still, encourage friends and family to follow suit. As well as that, get the message out....ignorance is their greatest ally in winning this fight - at everyone else's expense!
